Case Study: Scarborough

Delivering a dream, two-storey family home atop a coastal cliff is a very special kind of project, especially when your client invests their time to collaborate to make their vision come to life. That’s what happened with this high-end architectural new build, blending stand out features with quality construction to withstand coastal conditions that only a seaside clifftop can offer.

The Brief

Our client wanted to build their sophisticated architectural dream home on the cliff face of the seaside town of Scarborough, NSW. Incorporating their vision into the design, this new build demanded meticulous attention to detail throughout the entire building process.

Starting from the large-scale concrete works right through to the final interior finishes, this new build home showcases spectacular features including: a showstopping, industrial metal walkway connecting the upstairs main bedroom to the hallway; a suspended fireplace in the open plan kitchen, living and dining space; and 180 degree views framed by floor to ceiling windows.

The Challenges

This project required careful planning and preparation, including how to structure the building, the position of structural steel, and how services such as plumbing and electrical would be implemented into the framework for functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The block’s position required heavy bracing to ensure accordance with correct wind rating standards, and we worked closely with the engineers to ensure every material was wind rating compliant.

One large double-brick wall filled with concrete was constructed to ensure the correct load bearing for the project, and vital brickwork ensured the entire structure would be held up.

Delivery of materials to site required traffic control on a busy road, and when we weren’t managing vehicles, wind-driven rain and high winds kept us busy, especially as we approached lock-up stage.

The Design

A home of this calibre makes a remarkable first impression, and in this instance, it begins with the turntable driveway. The stunning exterior design features Silvertop Ash cladding from Victoria, enhanced by polished and unpolished concrete.

The sea facing windows required added protection, and Heka Hood products provided exactly what was needed. The property features a spacious outdoor courtyard complete with a pond and a balcony to take in the mountain views.

Entering the three-bedroom home’s statement iron door, the interior embraces 180 degree ocean views. Monochromatic tones reign in the tiling and joinery, and brushed copper hardware features throughout the wet areas. The industrial metal walkway above adds an industrial edge to the coastal vibe.

Executing a project of this standard is only possible with an exceptionally skilled team, and we were honoured to work alongside remarkable companies, including:
